No.163
THE PRINCES IN THE TOWER
John Everett Millais
1829-96

EDWARD and RICHARD.
the sons of RICHARD IV

When their father died in 1483, the two boys went to the Tower of London to prepare for the elder boy's coronation. Because he was only 13, his uncle Richard, Duke of Gloucester was made Protector, but within a few months the two boys were declared illegitimate, and the Duke was crowned King. The two brothers were never seen again. In 1674 when the skeletons of two children were discovered in the Tower, it was assumed that they were the remains of the young princes.
